Onalaja Crafts Renewal from Ashes with Its New Collection, Re:Birth at London Fashion Week

In the high-stakes arena of contemporary fashion, stories of resurrection are often hyperbolic—metaphors crafted by public relations teams to frame a designer’s creative pivot. But when Nigerian demi-couture label ONALAJA presented its Spring/Summer 2027 collection, Re:Birth, during its official runway debut at London Fashion Week, the narrative of destruction and renewal was intimately real.

The conceptual origins of Re:Birth trace back to 2020, when creative director Kanyinsola Onalaja first sketched a collection focused on transformation and finding beauty after loss. Those initial sketches sat dormant for years.

The concept evolved into reality after a catastrophic studio fire wiped out over a decade of ONALAJA’s archives, physical samples, custom fabrics, and irreplaceable embellishments. Facing the near-total destruction of her life’s work, Onalaja returned to those 2020 sketches, turning a theoretical exploration of the phoenix myth into an autobiography of survival.

The collection unfolds across three movements: The Burn, The Ash, and The Rebirth.

The Burn: Opens with intense ember reds, burnt oranges, and terracotta tones, channeling the raw energy and volatility of flame.

The Ash: Shifts into muted, scorched blacks and smoky grays, reflecting the quiet residue of devastation.

The Rebirth: Concludes with light returning via molten gold, iridescent textiles, and vivid bursts of color.

Technically, the collection showcases ONALAJA’s mastery of artisanal embellishment. Intentionally broken and shattered beads are painstakingly reassembled into elaborate, textured surfaces—a direct metaphor for rebuilding a brand piece by piece. Feathered silhouettes and crystal accents catch light like drifting sparks, seamlessly weaving Yoruba and Edo Bini cultural motifs through traditional beadwork and contemporary tailoring.

While luxury fashion has often been criticized for standardizing tight physical proportions, ONALAJA continues to challenge the norm by offering sizing from XXS to XXXXL on the official LFW schedule. Informed by Onalaja’s personal journey with fluctuating body sizes due to an autoimmune condition, the brand’s commitment to inclusive luxury ensures that high-craftsmanship, sculptural eveningwear remains accessible to women across diverse forms
