The 11th Edition of Togo’s FIMO228 Shakes up African Fashion

The 11th Togo international fashion festival, FIMO228 concluded in Togo’s capital Lome on Saturday, 24 February. A celebration of cultural cross-pollination, the four-day festival, held from February 21st to 24th, has over the years become a not-to-be-missed event in the fashion calendar in the country, attracting designers from home and abroad as well as numerous audiences.

The theme of this 11th edition of Togocom FIMO228 was “The impact of the environment on health”. FIMO228 stands out for its societal commitment. This 11th edition was particularly attractive by tackling current themes such as the fight against breast cancer, environmental protection and awareness against malaria.

Over 60 designers from various African countries participated in the festival, including established names and emerging talents. Some notable participants included Nigerian designer Ejiro Amos-Tafiri, known for her luxurious handcrafted pieces, and Ivorian designer Jean Rocard Yapo, who presented a minimalist and masculine collection using raphia and pagne kita fabric.

The highlight of the festival was the series of fashion shows, where designers presented their latest collections to a captivated audience. These shows featured a diverse range of styles, from traditional African prints and silhouettes to contemporary and avant-garde designs.

There was also a growing focus on sustainability within the festival, with some designers using eco-friendly fabrics and upcycled materials in their collections. This growing awareness reflects the increasing importance of sustainable practices in the global fashion industry.
