Akech was born December 25, 1999 in South Sudan but fled the civil war with her family to Kenya, where she spent her early years in a refugee camp. At the age of 7, she and her mother resettled in Adelaide, Australia. She has five siblings. Adut took the name of ”Mary” because people couldn’t pronounce her birth name correctly. She was bullied by her classmates due to her gaped tooth.

Akech was scouted by a modeling agency at the age of 13, but she didn’t start her modeling career until she was 16. Her family encouraged her to start her career early. but she took the plunge when she was sixteen and signed a contract with her mom’s agency Chadwick Models. Her aunt prepared a local fashion show where she made her runway debut. Soon she was signed to Elite Model Management in France. She quickly rose through the ranks and made her fashion week debut in 2016 as an exclusive for Saint Laurent.

Since then, Akech has walked for all the major fashion houses, including Chanel, Dior, Givenchy, Valentino, and Versace. She has also appeared on the covers of numerous magazines, including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Elle.

In 2018, Akech was named Model of the Year by models.com. She was also one of the 15 women selected to appear on the cover of the September 2019 issue of British Vogue, which was edited by Meghan Markle.

Akech was chosen as the model to be shot for the calendar shoot in 2018 for Pirelli Calendar which was shot by photographer Tim Walker. For the project, she was joined by some celebrities like Sean Combs, RuPaul, Naomi Campbell, Sasha Lane and Lil Yachty.

In the Chanel Haute Couture Fall 2018 show in Paris, she made news by being the second black model for the Couture show. She became a Chanel bride after Alek Wek. She was handpicked by Karl Lagerfeld to be the bride of the show.

Adut Akech has had a significant impact by constantly speaking out against the racial diversity in the fashion industry. She is also working with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in promoting causes to support refugees worldwide.

Akech is not involved in a relationship with anyone at the moment. She is focused on her career. It was rumoured that Adut Akech was in a relationship with Nigerian singer Douglas Jack Agu, better known by the stage name Runtown. The duo celebrated the singer’s 31st birthday on the island of Paros in Greece.
