Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story premieres today, April 16, 2023, in South Africa. The event, which has other notable African actresses in attendance, is being held in Quoin Rock Wine Estate.

The series, written and produced by Shonda Rhimes, is a prequel spin-off of Bridgerton. The prequel will look at the life of Queen Charlotte a fan favourite character portrayed by accomplished Guyanese-British actress Golda Rosheuvel.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story features the origin stories of much-beloved characters, including Lady Danbury (a role reprised by Adjoa Andoh). The young Lady Danbury is played by breakout star Arsema Thomas, a thespian with roots in Ethiopia, Nigeria and South Africa.

The high-society Bridgerton-themed event is being attended by Nigerian, Tanzanian, Kenyan and South African personalities, actors, and influencers.

This series tells the story of Queen Charlotte’s rise to prominence and power and how her marriage to King George sparked both a great love story and a societal shift, creating the world of the Ton inherited by the characters in Bridgerton.

With Shonda Rhimes as the showrunner, executive producer, and writer, and Tom Verica as the director and executive producer, this series promises to be as entertaining and engaging as its predecessor. The South African premiere event is part of the global celebrations ushering in the six-part series set to launch on Netflix on 4 May 2023.
