Tolula Adeyemi: What the style icon of Nigerian heritage who took over the London Fashion Industry did next
Tolula Adeyemi is an award winning model, muse, celebrity DJ and actress of Nigerian heritage that has been featured by the best in press (including the African). Magazines, newspapers, style supplements, platforms, blogs and social media have hailed her a style icon. Fashion authorities such as Vogue and Teen Vogue have heralded her an ‘it girl’ and the likes of Harper’s Bazaar and ELLE have listed her best dressed..
Discovered as a teen in London by the owner of Select Models, Chrissie Castagnetti, Tolula has gone on to capture the heart of London’s fashion industry.
Her achievements along the way have been many. The British newspaper, Metro Newspaper is quoted as saying “This is a girl that has done it all”. Some of these milestones include being a muse to the late Vivienne Westwood. The matriarch of British fashion placed Tolula in her campaigns and had her walk her catwalk. She has featured in other campaigns for the likes of Julia Clancey and Hari. She was chosen to feature in a Kylie Minogue music video ‘2 Hearts’. She subsequently went on tour with the pop icon appearing on stage as part of a fantasy band. In addition, she appeared on Britain’s X Factor, The Nobel Peace Prize, Strictly Dancing and Children In Need with the singer. Tolula has also starred in Dustin Hoffman and Dame Emma Thompson’s film ‘Last Chance Harvey’, collaborated on designer collections and won awards such as the Rodial Awards and The ELLE Style Awards.
As a celebrity DJ she has been highly sought after both in London and Los Angeles. Her clients have included Vogue, GQ, Armani, Harrods, YSL, MTV, Ulta Beauty, Forever 21, Rachel Zoe, Toronto International Film Premiere and more.
With reference to her influence, circa 2008-2013, it should be noted she was the only black woman routinely featured in the event pages of British Vogue, Grazia and other. In many hallowed spaces (the most glamorous events and red carpets such as feature film premieres, award ceremonies, Cannes, philanthropic functions, launches and more) she was the only Black woman in attendance. What is even more interesting about this is that she is not just Black but of sub-saharan African (Nigerian) descent. When few Blacks and or Africans had no access to a notoriously difficult industry, Tolula had full access. She is the reason why Black women saw a representation of themselves in the high echelons of success.
Having achieved it all, she is currently working on a vampire movie with Manolo Gonzalez Vergara, the son of Hollywood beauty icon Sofia Vergara of American hit TV show ‘Modern Family’. She also has another new role in a feature film with an acclaimed director in the pipeline filming late spring/early summer in the US. In addition to this she is working on a single with an EP to follow. This musical debut will be supported with a musical video.
