KAMPALA, UGANGA - Even with the late arrival of the third issue of the glossy African Woman, its publisher Sylvia Owori still won favour with her guests. She had promised at the magazine’s launch last November that her publication would never hit the magazine racks past the 10th day of each month, but this delay was beyond her control though. The death of the emir of Dubai where the magazine is printed had stalled printing for days so he could be mourned.
For her guest list at last Wednesday’s launch at the plush Emin Pasha Hotel, Owori replaced those party-hopping glamour girls with an enterprising and odd-fighting lot. She invited the members of Mama Club, a psychosocial club of women living with HIV/Aids whose stories brought a tear to many. Also present were women from the Market Vendors’ Aids Project (Mavap) who put on quite a show when they cat walked in their busuutis. This project, overseen by Ms. Angelina Wapakhabulo, wife to former Parliamentary Speaker, Mr. James Wapakhabulo is present in three city markets.
Away from the magazine’s givens- great design, awesome photography and a glossy feel- you can read about Doreen Kayongo’s plans after TV, Deputy Speaker Rebecca Kadaga’s daring attitude that made her the first female lawyer in Uganda to open her own chambers and profiles on Africa’s first female elected leader Liberian president Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and Angela Merkel, Germany’s first female chancellor.
The magazine also features its own retrospective look at 2005, which include great photos from the Uganda International Fashion Week. Irene Ochwo gives moms-to-be indispensable advice on how to shop for a nanny.
She should know for someone that has had four nannies in just 10 months. There are a few gaffes though, like the Hope Mukasa’s Hunk of the Month profile whose text was jumbled up and reads like last month’s issue. No wonder the Sabrina’s Pub proprietor looked so distraught at the party. Hawk-eyed readers will also notice punctuation mistakes in some of the text.
