Wine Tourism Today Offers More Than A Glass Or Two For Tasting

South Africa — South Africa’s wine routes have been united in one comprehensive guide with the launch of the new Wine Tourism Handbook.

The unique guide is the only publication that includes all 16 local wine routes, the individual wineries on these routes as well as the activities one can experience.

In line with the international trend, wine tourism is about so much more than merely tasting and buying wine and the Wine Tourism Handbook presents the wine farms as tourist destinations with various activities.

Although this naturally includes wine tasting and purchasing, this is but one of the elements of the handbook where a strong focus has also been placed on culinary delights, wildlife, arts and crafts and much more.

“One of the main aims of the publication was to involve visitors beyond a spectator level so that they can truly experience the unique qualities of contemporary South African lifestyle that is associated with enjoyment of wine at its source,” explains publisher Monika Elias.

“The handbook is an indispensable travel companion for any person wishing to visit and explore any, or all, of the wine routes because of its extensive information which is presented in a visually attractive and user-friendly fashion.”
Some of the handbook’s highlights include:

  • All 16 wine routes with strip maps of each route.
  • Wine farms on each of the routes with contact details and opening times.
  • An explanation of wine tourism in the South African context.
  • Historical overview of the winelands and local wine.
  • Education on South African varietals.
  • Cellar door etiquette.
  • Map of winelands, with publicity bureaux of each area.

Things to do: wine tasting, restaurants, accommodation, outdoor activities, golf, wildlife, arts and crafts, events and festivals, wellness, entertainment, wine tourism destinations and more.

The Wine Tourism Handbook is available through Exclusive Books, the offices on the wine routes, wine farms and leading retailers, or directly through The World’s Favourite Publications.
