Gerald Andan - Biography

Gerald was born in Kumasi on the 17 of October 1972 to Dr. Andani Andan & Mrs. Patricia Andan. He was the second of 4 siblings and a Prince of the Sagnerigu Paramouncy.

Gerald first attended Kindergarten at Ashanti Goldfields Primary School in 1975. The family moved to Accra in 1976 and he attended Morning Star Preparatory School from 1976 to 1978. It was at Morning Star School that he first showed his competitive streak by coming first in a balloon race while he was in class 1.

In 1979 Gerald moved to Christ The King International School which he attended till 1984.
He then attended Achimota Secondary School from 1984 to 1992 (Form 1 to Upper Six). During his sixth form in Achimota he was the Assembly Hall Prefect.

Gerald had always had a dream of becoming a pilot and displaying a ‘can do’ spirit Gerald pursued a position with the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority for his National Service. Gerald worked in the Control Tower for the duration of his National Service, the experience of which made him more determined to pursue his dream.

Gerald was convinced by his father and mother to complete his first degree before chasing his dream of being a pilot and on completion of his National Service, obtained admission to the University of Science and Technology where he gained a BA in Land Economy.

It was soon after his first degree that Gerald responded to an advert for trainee pilots from Ghana Airways. He took various examinations both academic and physical and was one of 6 candidates selected by Ghana Airways from a total of over 1000 applicants.

Upon gaining selection Gerald together with his 5 other colleagues were sent to England to undergo pilot training at the Oxford Aviation College. There they underwent training with other pilots from airlines all over the world.

On completion of their training in Oxford in 2001 the team went on to Helsinki, Finland where they did their specialisation in the flying of the DC9 aircraft.

Gerald returned to Ghana in 2002 with his colleagues where they flew the Ghana Airways DC9’s on the West Coast route. He flew with Ghana Airways until the demise of the airline in 2004

Gerald in his bid to keep alive his dream of flying obtained a 1 year contract with Sosoliso airlines in Nigeria. His contract was due to expire at the end of this year and he was looking forward to returning home. Indeed the whole family were looking forward to a joyous occasion on account of his forthcoming marriage to his fiancée Ms Linda Ausekre.

Gerald had everything to live for when he was cruelly taken away on the 10th of December 2005 in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
