Nancy: A Shining Star In Tanzania And The world

We are all beautiful, intelligent and able bodied, let us get together and fight against social injustice against women with one voice throughout the world,’ said Nancy Summary, Miss Tanzania and Miss World Africa.

Nancy does not only possess the legs a woman requires to make heads turn, but is also blessed with a beautiful face. Many freeze when they look at her.

There is something captivating about her lips too. She looks at the camera with the simplicity of a child, the lips not quite open, yet not so closed, giving the viewer just a glimpse of her two front-upper teeth.

Her nose has a gentle bridge. Not wide, not narrow or thin either. There are noses that face downward to protect the owner from the oncoming gust of air.

Not Nancy’s. Others have one that so faces forward in the manner of a car’s headlamps, as if challenging the wrath of hostile weather. Not Nancy’s. Hers is somewhere between.
Her eyes are mesmerizing.

There is something Chinese about them. Yet they are not all that slanting because, being so much African, she is not Chinese. How could Mother Nature have blended the two racial qualities together, not so prominently but just subtle?

Has Nancy bribed the Almighty? Is she one of those whom we say God created on the third day of creation when he had become more experienced with the art, still fresh and eager to work, the hangover long gone?

On September 3, this year, Nancy emerged Tanzania’s beauty queen.

For the first time, the argument over the judges’ decision was minimal. Nancy was the national favourite.

As usual, however, there were still a couple of doubting Thomases as to whether she would make it in the upcomimg contests.
Nancy looks at the camera with angelic glamour.

That certainly was what knocked out the beauty jury of the 54th Miss World contest in Sanya, China last Saturday.

In her words shortly after arriving from China, where she scooped the Miss World Africa slot, Nancy emphasized that talent is the best way for someone to achieve high marks because she participated in sports and sang that’s why she gained high marks.

She said that she was not in any way different from the other contestants from Africa, whom she defeated, only that she excelled by adding more value to her natural beauty.

The new African beauty star said she had a big challenge from Miss South Africa and Miss Kenya, who were her real credible challengers during the course of the show.

She added that she never expected to emerge the winner considering the fact that the former were clad in African attire.

Nancy Summary returned from China where her achievement brought pride for her nation. She came back to Tanzania bigger, glowing and even brighter than the time she left the country hardly a month ago.

She is the world’s sixth most beautiful woman. What a wonderful and extra-ordinary achievement for herself in particular and for her nation at large.

’She has made us proud,’ said Miss Ilala organizer Jackson Kalikumtima.

When Nancy emerged Miss Kinondoni, ’the most photogenic girl’ just before Miss Tanzania beauty contest, people took a second look at the girl.

She had also just emerged as the most attractive contestant on camera according to ratings of Darhotwire, an information gateway in Dar es Salaam.

She believes that parents should allow their daughters to participate in matters concerning the country and think about them instead of just thinking about themselves.

’Other ladies fear to participate because of discrimination, but there was no racial discrimination,’ she said.

Nancy Summary, a 19-year old lady who was born in 1986 and grew up in Arusha, is said to have studied in Kenya. She schooled at Blue Bells Academy and later joined Masai Girls in Nairobi.

She is currently waiting for her examination results and it is her ambition to go to college to pursue a Bachelor of laws degree and later specialize in corporate administration law.

After her studies in Nairobi, Nancy decided to join the beauty contest for the first time, but she never expected to become the queen of Africa.

Through determination and courage, Nancy became Miss Kinondoni and later, Miss Tanzania and it was unbelievable for her because it was her first time to participate in the contest.

She said that the support from her parents, government and media made her achieve the best, which is now considered to be national pride.

For years now, Tanzania has sent competitors to world beauty contests, but has come back empty handed.

Consequently a fierce debate has raged whether there is a reason to compete at all or not.

’We are wasting time and money,’ a citizen was reported as saying. ’We shall never make it.’ ’ We are just spoiling our girls for nothing,’ said another one.

Negative comments have been made about the sport.
However, amidst all the uproar and the hail, the sport of glamour has soldiered on.

Its supporters said beauty pageant was still a young sport in the country and needed patience and hard work. They gave examples of countries that took the world title after many years of competition.

’How then can people say such things about our failure to clinch the world title after only a couple of attempts?’ Asked Hashim Lundenga, coordinator of the body that organized the event.

Nancy has not only won herself a place in the world of physical glory and perhaps a licence for bigger business but has also put Tanzania on a bright world sport.

Her achievement will encourage many girls to come forth for the competition.

The nation has also realized that participating in beauty contests is not a waste of money because there is so much talent and potential in the country.

She has encouraged more girls to join the sport and put more effort into it.

She concluded her words with her personal motto, ’Aim for the star.’

Beauty pageants are an indisputable way of empowering women in the country. Those who fail to make it in class can make it in the field of sport, as many men have.
