His Majesty Mighty King Kong (Paul Imbaya) last Saturday caused a stir during the Orange Democratic Movement political rally in Nairobi when he arrived on horseback accompanied by a handful of aides.
The crowd jostled to have a glimpse of the reggae singer, who donned a red suit with a matching tie. In his hand was a national flag which he waved to the chanting crowd.
The king had to plead with the crowd to avoid interrupting a prayer that was being said at the time of his “triumphant” arrival.
“A number of bigshots arrived in expensive vehicles and being a people’s representative, I decided to come on a horse which represents peace,” said King Kong who later in the day rocked the crowd with a number of his hits.
Gospel songbird Esther Wahome, also entertained the crowd with songs from her recently released album, Asali. The songs include Dawa and Furahia wokovu. She was accompanied by her four lady dancers.
C’Zars in home stretch
A coast based youthful musician is a happy person now that he is a few steps away from school.
C’Zars (Mohammed Abdulkarrim), sat for the last paper of the end of year exams on Thursday and is eagerly awaiting for next year to join form four. “I have just sat my last paper today. I’ m eagerly waiting for next year to sit my final examinations so that I can concentrate on other things, including my musical career,” said C’Zars.
Asked if he would have shows during the Christmas holiday, the artiste who has done a number of songs including Amka ukatike, said all would depend on his manager.
“I’m not aware whether my father has made some arrangements or not,” said the artiste. His father - Mzee Makasi doubles up as his manager.
Beside looking for customers, Makasi ensures that his son’s music music is in the market throughout the country.
Amani to rock Kisumu City
Amani (Cecilia Wairimu), of Ninanaki and Bad Boy fame is promising fireworks at the lake side city of Kisumu this evening when she makes her first appearance there.
“My fans should expect fire works,” said Amani who recently released single Bad Boy, is getting attention from entertainment spots and radio stations.
She is amongst a number of artistes expected to perform at the Mega City Complex inside Nakumatt Supermarkets, Kisumu. Others are Bamboo and Kantai while spinning will be done by Nairobi Djs- Stone and Eazy B of Club Qatika.
The effervescent Amani says she has made a come back to the music scene after being confined in employment by a certain firm in Nairobi.
“I just felt the urge of singing and that is why I decided to do away with the job to concentrate on music”.
Who will dance for Reffigah?
Female dancers are the in-thing, which is why Refigah (Yusuf Noah) is dying for several of them.
“Now that I have my own deejay, I feel it is the high time I got dancers who will be dancing to my tune”.
Beside shows, the musician who recently released a single dubbed Duftah, says he will use the dancers during the recording of his video instead of hiring them. His latest song featuring Cutta-C was done by Jesse Bukindu of Ketabul studio.
A number of leading names including Jerry Joe and Pili Pili have permanent female dancers.
Woman called rapper Calyd
Rapper Calyd Mohammed of Man ‘N’ Men (Men of Naaman) has had enough share of sleepless nights after been “stalked” by a UFF - an unknown female fan. Using a masked number, the shadowy fan been called Calyd who is a cousin of the late Benga maestro cum mystic, Prof Ahmed Bakari Naaman.
Calyd claims that efforts to meet the fan twice have been futile.
“Whenever she calls, I usually arrange for a date, but she doesn’t show up”.
He adds that the lady claims to know him including all his family members.
“I was surprised the first day she called and described my family. I thought it was some of my female friends but all of them have denied it, “says Calyd.
With Prof Naaman’s son- Abubakar Calyd is working on an album to include hits like Rudi Nyumbani, Kiuno Chako, and Helter Skelter.
Kriss Darling headed for coast
Mombasa reggae fans have something to be happy about starting next Friday, December 9.
One of Nairobi’s hottest reggae deejay, Kriss Darling (Chris Odhiambo) of the Doh’ty Family will start playing at Florida Mombasa.
Better known for his show, Jam Rock, a reggaechart show that airs on Easy FM on Saturday from 4 to 6pm, Juala, as he is known to his fans who shorten his name to CD, says he is going to give fans what they have been missing for a long time: Good mix of reggae.
“We are going to change the Coast reggae scene,” he said. “The fans had better get ready for what we are going to offer as it has not been offered to them for a very long time and we promise they will only get the best from us.”
Kriss has been deejaying for the past four years, an experience that should put him in good stead. Before he got his own programme on 96.4 Easy FM, he used to co-host the reggae show, Natural Mystic, with Talia Oyando on the then 96.4 Nation FM, which is now 96.4 Easy FM and has a reggae show called Night Nurse.
Currently, the Doh’ty Family plays at New Florida on Koinange Street on Wednesday nights and on Sunday nights in Florida 2000 along Moi Avenue.
The other members of the Doh’ty Family who will play with Kriss in Mombasa include Patty Ranks, Johnny Kul, Kevo Badmann and Tony Rebel.
